Causes of root canals

Through the pulp, the tooth is kept alive but severe caries or dental fillings can inflame or infect the pulp. With a root canal treatment, the inflamed pulp can be removed and replaced with a rubber material called gutta-percha. Through gutta-percha, the canals are kept free from contamination and infection and the tooth can be retained instead of extracted.
Various causes of acute pulp inflammation are described below, which are accompanied by swelling, internal pressure in the tooth and pain:

• Long-term caries
• Deep fillings near the nerve
• Repeated dental treatments – e.g. replacement of a large filling
• Traumatic damage such as cracks, chipping or bridges
• Traumatic occlusion – repeated excessive impact on the tooth, when the teeth are clenched

Does a root canal hurt?

A root canal begins with opening the tooth completely, in order to find all the canals. Number of canals differs from tooth to tooth; there can be 1-4 canals in a tooth. When all the canals have been located, they are measured electronically, so that the root filling covers the entire canal from the end of the root all the way up. The channels are carefully cleaned with files. Then they are flushed with an antiseptic solution and finally the canals are filled with gutta-percha. A root canal can be painful, but the pain goes away with anesthesia that is usually given in conjunction with the treatment. After the root filling, the tooth must be fitted with composite or a crown, depending on how much of the tooth has been lost.

Another method consists of two steps: cleaning and filling. If the tooth inflammation also extends to the surrounding bone material, the pain is caused by both regions. An antiseptic agent is then used after the canal cleaning. After that, a healing period of at least one week with a provisional filling must follow. If you are free of discomfort after that and we can see that successful bone healing has begun, we continue the treatment with the second step. We finish the root canal treatment with an individually adapted tooth filling.
